What is Whiplash?

Also known as neck strain, whiplash injuries are characterized by a group of symptoms that usually occur after a rear end collision in Largo and Clearwater. With this soft tissue injury, the intervertebral joints, nerve roots, cervical muscles, discs, and ligaments may be damaged. It is most commonly caused during a car accident where a stationary car is struck from behind. This rear impact forces the head and neck of the driver into a backward, hyperextended position as the seat pushes the body forward while the head and neck lag behind. The head and neck are then thrown into a forward, hyper flexed position. These two movements cause the lower vertebrae in the neck to be forced into an abnormal S-shape, which damages the soft tissues in the neck. While whiplash injuries’ symptoms will sometimes be delayed for at least 24 hours, but will usually include:

  • Sleep disturbances
  • Neck stiffness and pain
  • Low back pain
  • Headaches, usually at the base of the skull
  • Pain between shoulder blades
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Ringing in ears

Treatment Options for Whiplash Injuries

When it comes to whiplash injuries, the original treatment options included the patient wearing a neck brace for several weeks, and being told to rest as much as possible. However, recent studies have now revealed that patients who limited use of their necks were more likely to develop chronic pain. This is because immobilization decreases blood flow to the muscles, which keeps them from healing completely. Instead, taking part in gentle therapy right away will be most beneficial to reducing pain as quickly as possible.

Also, recent changes to the PIP laws here in Largo, Clearwater, and all of Florida mandate that if you do not seek medical treatment with 14 days, you will not be eligible for insurance benefits.

How Can A Chiropractor Help?

Here at Coastal Chiropractic of Largo and Clearwater, we can not only treat your recent whiplash injuries, but we are confident that we can help you manage the pain of old injuries as well. Many of the symptoms of whiplash are the conditions we are specially trained to treat, so let us help you. While each case will be different, some of the most common chiropractic treatments we perform for patients after an auto accident are:

  • Manipulation: Our mild spinal manipulations involve us gently moving the joint into the direction that it is limited. Manipulations may also involve applying a short thrust, or a slow movement in the restricted area’s direction.
  • Muscle relaxation: Muscle relaxation and stimulation involves the muscles being gently stretched to relieve extreme tension.
  • Related therapies: When paired with trigger point therapy, physical therapy, and exercise rehabilitation, chiropractic care can be extremely effective in relieving the symptoms caused by whiplash injuries.

At Coastal Chiropractic of Largo and Clearwater, we will diagnose this injury by first examining your entire spine. Even if the discomfort is only in your neck, there may be other regions that are affected as well. We will then isolate the areas that have limited joint movement, increased muscle spasms, or damage to the ligaments. After this we will look for any tenderness along the vertebrae- typically caused by whiplash injuries, and how smoothly all of your joints move together.

To better understand how your spine works, and how it was affected by the whiplash injury, we may also analyze your posture and how you walk. It is not uncommon for chiropractors to order MRIs or X-rays of their patients’ head or neck to gain a better understanding of exactly how everything was affected by the crash. We don’t just want to lessen your current pain; we want you to achieve long-term health and wellness.
