One of the most common reasons patients come into our clinic to see Clearwater chiropractor Dr. Marc Rogers is because they have been experiencing neck and back pain. While there are a range of obvious causes for discomfort in this area of your body—from auto accident injuries to sports-related strains—there is an increasing number of people experiencing spinal problems due to more subtle, less-known causes.
In this age of technology, most of us spend a considerable portion of our days hunched over screens—whether it is in front of our computers 40 hours a week, texting on our phones, or playing around on our tablets. And it is taking a toll on our health. More now than ever before, people are in need of the therapeutic services offered by Clearwater chiropractors to undo the damage caused when our body spends hours on hours holding up phones, hanging our necks to read the screens, etc. Most of the time, people don’t even realize how much the way we sit, stand, and even lay down while using these gadgets affect our health and, therefore, over-all wellbeing.
The Importance of Posture
The condition of your spinal column, which is the powerhouse of the central nervous system, largely influences not only your appearance, but your physical, mental and even emotional health as well! Studies have shown that simply standing straighter can make people feel significantly more confident (fake it ‘til you make it, right?). But “standing up straight” isn’t the only aspect of it.
Even without visiting your Clearwater chiropractor, you might already recognize that you have a problem with your spine, neck, or back. Has anyone ever told you that you hunch your shoulders? When your neck is not in proper alignment with your spine, it adds a lot of unnecessary tension and pressure on the surrounding muscles. In fact, for every inch your neck is slanted forward out of position, the heavier that pressure becomes and—therefore—the more damage it causes.

Tips for Improving Your Posture
Even when you’re not actively seeking the assistance of a Clearwater chiropractor, we still want to provide you with any and all insight and advice we can give you that may help you improve the health of your spine. Below are some tips to consider for your day-to-day living:
- When you are texting or reading something on your phone, don’t drop your head forward. Try to become as mindful as possible about bringing the phone up to meet you at eye level, not the other way around.
- When standing (or sitting), try to imagine your spine being as flat as it is when you lay down on your back. Stand tall, straighten your back and make sure your shoulders are pushed back and not collapsing towards your center—but don’t exaggerate this too much. Your shoulder blades shouldn’t be reaching for each other!
- When using a laptop, don’t put it on your lap. Make sure you are sitting at a table or desk, with your chair pulled in enough that most of your back is resting against it, and so that your feet can sit comfortably (don’t cross your legs!) on the floor with your thighs parallel to the ground.
- It might also help to keep a small mirror at your desk or places where you frequently sit so you can check in every now and then to make sure you aren’t slouching too much.
